I don play Standard at all, and rarely draft or buy packs now, so the only time I spend money on a magic card is when I know that it will contribute to a long lasting enjoyment of the game. Investing in the two Modern decks that I have (both have crossover with Mox Opal and a few other expensive cards like Thoughtseize) has allowed me to play at a competitive level if I so choose, or just have a good time at FNM at my local store.
